After president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner’s participation in Washington’s 2008 G-20 summit, the seven most powerful countries in the world (G-7) plus Holland and Spain evaluated the possibility of expelling Argentina from the 20 industrialised and emerging countries’ forum.

“The group agreed Argentine government seemed conscious of it being perceived as politically conflictive and that this might have the country expelled from the G-20. Or, that actions destined to fight global crisis would be transferred to another forum which would exclude Argentina”, stated a summery U.S embassy sent Washington on 16th March 2009 according to one of the leaked cables from WikiLeaks. Argentine daily La Nación gained access to the cables.

The self-called “G-7 plus” argued their countries’ leaders should “directly contact president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner to ensure her constructive role in G-20’s summit” after 2008’s incidents in Washington.

Back in 2008, Fernández de Kirchner criticised the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and demanded its reform. Her speech doubled that of her counterparts –including George W. Bush’s- and was late for the official photograph, forcing a second take.

“G-7 plus” wanted to spread a general sense of conviction and momentum in order to boost global consumerism” amongst a turbulent U.S recession and world crisis. The group of the seven plus two saw a half-hearted Casa Rosada in this aspect. Argentina was alleged to be “strictly focused on the IMF’s reform and emergent economies’ access to IMF’s credit unconditionally or with scarce requirements”. G-7 clearly saw their easiest and celebrated way out of the economical crisis threatened: emerging countries’ borrowing from the IMF as a means of crisis transmission and political submission.

In late 2010, over 250,000 U.S diplomatic cables were leaked to the media by WikiLeaks. This is yet another revelation that tenses and obscures Argentina’s foreign relations.
